Doug Persson, Chairman of OSWCU, opened the first meeting of 2003 at 5:30 P.M. on January 22, 2003. The meeting was held in the conference room of HDR Engineering. Doug introduced himself (Chairperson), John Volk (Vice Chairperson) Tina Chee (Treasurer), and Lesli Merhaut. (Secretary).
Doug invited the meeting attendees to introduce themselves.
In addition:
- He also announced the goal of 6 meetings for 2003.
- Encouraged people to visit the OSWCU web site often since it is kept up to date with any news or happenings on a frequent basis.
- He made people aware that jobs listings are now posted on the web site and there is one presently available for review.
- He asked the attendees if any of their employers have switched over to using V8 as of yet. (The City of Portland Transportation Department said they made the switch.)
- Announced that the Bentley V8 Road Show will be here in Portland on February 25th. The OSWCU board is planning on attending it.
The meeting was then opened for questions. An attendee asked what was the best way to scale reference files unequally, such as with road profiles that have exaggerated vertical scales. It was decided that reference files can not be unequally scaled and the work around was to copy the profile and then scale that unequally. If any subsequent change then occured to the profile, the original was changed and the old, scaled copy was replaced with a new copy which was, again, rescaled.
Doug was the presenter for this meeting's program. The topic of the program was The 3D Work Flow. Since the topic of 3D is so huge, it was decided that the 3D work flow would be a good place to start. Most people have heard of using 3D models but have no idea how to create drawings from them.
Synopsis of presentation:
The five basic steps to creating drawings from 3D models. (Most of what was said pertained to Microstation/J).
- Create or Modify the Model.
- Create and Setup Views.
- Create Hiddenlines from Saved Views.
- Create Drawings from Hiddenlines
- Revise Drawings: Go Back to Number 1 and Repeat Steps as Necessary.
The text of the presentation is contained in this MS Word file: The Basic 3D Workflow
The second portion of the meeting was taken over by Dave Silveira and Mike Obleski, of Shining Sky Design and Obleski Design respectively. They presented several fly-through animations of recently completed jobs, as well as a narrative of how they were created. A lively discussion of 3D followed afterward.
The meeting ended at 7:10pm.
